Getting to know The Heartbreak Express
Interview conducted by Jake Serrone
Jake Serrone: To start off I wanted to know what first attracted you two to the wrestling business. What made you make the decision to step into the squared circle?
Sean Davis: Well, it's obvious just by looking at our sexy bodies and by seeing our athletic skill in the ring that we could have made it in virtually any sport or entertainment field that we wanted to but from the time that we were little kids growing up on the mean streets of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts we were always attracted to the glitz and glamour of professional wrestling.
Phil Davis: Yeah, I mean let's face it while we are good enough athletes to have gone to the Major Leagues in baseball or the NFL in football what's more exciting than being able to kick someone square in the teeth with your size 13 boot and then be able to strut around and strike a pose to whatever beautiful lady catches you eye in the stands. In football they will penalize you for celebrating after scoring a
touchdown. That doesn't sound like much fun to me and the only thing we really care about in life is having fun whether it be in the ring or in the bedroom.
JS: Was there anyone in particular when you were kids watching wrestling that really influenced what you do today?
SD: There were many, many different guys and teams that influenced what we do and anyone with any brains in their head could see it as plain as the big nose on your ugly face.
JS: That certainly seems uncalled for!
PD: I apologize for the Superstar being in a bad mood today but we wrestled in a really disgusting town last night and he wasn't able to find any women that were up to his standards so he is feeling a bit frustrated today. To properly answer your question I would have to say the first tag team we saw to really make us jump up and say that's what we want to do was The Fabulous Freebirds of Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts.
SD: I agree they were kicking so much ass and were just so cool that they stood out head and shoulders above everyone else in World Class Championship Wrestling which was the first wrestling we ever saw.
PD: Yeah, they were in the middle of their feud with the Von Erichs at the time and those boys were the ultimate goody goody, never break the rules, squeeky clean fan favorites that everyone loved and The Freebirds just delighted in not just beating them up but humiliating them in any and every way they could. The Freebirds didn't care what the fans thought. They didn't care what the promoters wanted. They just simply did whatever the Hell they wanted to do. They played by their own rules and lived every day like it was a non stop party much in the same way The Heartbreak Express does.
SD: Another team that obviously were huge influences on us were the Midnight Express.
JS: Which version?
SD: Either version. Stan Lane and Dennis Condrey brought different things to the table but they both meshed so well with Bobby Eaton. I think you could easily say that Bobby and Dennis were the best tag team of the early to Mid 80's and Bobby and Stan Lane were the best team of the late 80's and early 90's.
JS: Does it bother you guys when people say things like tag team wrestling is dead and that there are no more real teams like The Midnight Express when you guys obviously feel like you are walking in the footsteps of your idols?
PD: Anyone that doesn't see the influence of the great teams of years past on The Heartbreak Express is obviously just not paying attention and they are not even worthy of being mentioned. We spend literally 20-30 hours per week studying tapes of all of the great tag teams in wrestling history. We are the ultimate students of tag team wrestling.
SD: I can promise you one thing and that is that everyone in the wresting world will soon have no choice but to sit up and take notice of the greatness that is The Heartbreak Express as we are going to be taking the world by storm in many ways in the very near future.
JS: Would you care to elaborate?
SD: If I were free to discuss everything that we are currently working on then I obviously would take the opportunity to do so but since I CAN'T go into details I won't..back to the interview!
JS: Fair enough. You have mentioned teams from the past that you looked up to and have idolized and learned from. What are some of the current tag teams that you are most impressed with?
PD: There are many, many tag teams around that the self proclaimed wrestling experts are quick to declare to be "great" but I can honestly say that there is no one on the current wrestling scene that impresses me.
JS: Wait a minute. You guys in the last few years have taken on some pretty tough competition and your win/loss record does not indicate that you are so much better
than your contemporaries like Black Market, Modern Day Theory...
SD: This interview is supposed to be about the Heartbreak Express and not anyone else and when we tell you that there is no other tag team in wrestling today that impresses us that is exactly what we mean!
JS: This interview is about you guys but I am conducting it and I am not going to let you get around talking about your contemporaries. Now lets take Joey Machete and Shawn Murphy collectively known as Black Market.
PD: Take them? You can take them wherever the Hell you want to take them cause we don't want to have anything to do with those cheating scumbags.
JS: Maybe the reason you don't want to talk about them is that they have become the absolute biggest threat to your precious FIP Tag Team Titles. On top of that they also defeated you recently in the Lords of the Ring International Tag Team Tournament.
SD: First of all the only reason they beat us in that tournament deal was because they were the home town boys and the promoter and referees made sure that no one was going to beat them. We had for weeks been preparing to take on those snot nosed punks Modern Day Theory and then right before match time it was switched to being us vs Black Market. This totally knocked us off of our game plan but we still dominated them in this match and were about to get the win when right in plain view of the referee Shawn Murphy pulled a brick out of his tights and he knocked Phil out cold. Now as far as the FIP Tag Team Titles go we have now held these titles for eight months now and have taken on all of the top tag teams in the country and have put them away one by one clean in the middle of the ring and the same thing is gonna happen to Black Market. Yeah, they may have gotten a non title win over us but that a $1.05 will get you a cup of coffee. When the belts are on the line is when it really counts and no one is better at rising to the occasion than the Heartbreak Express and I mean that in more ways than one!
JS: What do you guys think about fans that criticize you for being too "old fashioned" in your wrestling style?
SD: If your talking about fans that think you have to flip three times in the air before landing a move on someone to be effective we don't give a damn what they think. You see despite how flashy we dress and the strutting of our stuff that we like to do when you come down to it we are as old school as you get. To us this is WRESTLING. It's not gymnastics and it's not Ringling Brothers Circus. When I jump in the air and drop my 320lbs on someone do you think it's gonna hurt any less because I didn't do a back flip first? I'll tell you right now I love to wrestle these guys who feel they have to make their moves extra "flashy" to make the 5% of the crowd that is into that stuff happy because while their worried about getting an extra rotation on some stupid flippidy flop move their doing I'm getting my right fist ready to connect right between the eyes and knock their stupid ass out. Another thing I love is when your outside the ring and the guy your wrestling wants to launch himself in the air and flip two or three times before hitting you. You try that with me and guess what? I'm moving six inches to the right or left of where your heading and your gonna crash into the floor.
PD: He's not kidding. We have ended careers by simply stepping out of the way of some moron who thought we were going to just stand there and wait for them to do their "big high flying move" for the sake of the show. Guess what? This might be show business to some but to us this is as serious as it gets.
JS: How can you say that with the way you guys dress and the antics you two go through?
PD: Everything we do is for a reason. If an opponent of ours doesn't take us seriously because of how we dress or how we act well then too bad for them because we might be prettier than a pony but we kick like a mule.
SD: Beautifully put Fabulous One! You see we were never into watching the fancy technical wrestlers. To us pro wrestling meant guys like Bruiser Brody, Abdulla the Butcher, Dick Murdock, Terry Gordy, Stan Hansen and I could go on and on. These guys were not fancy. Most of them never left their feet in their lives but there was one thing they could do better than anyone else and that was beat people up. That's what The Heartbreak Express is all about. Simply put we like to hurt people and we are damn good at it! If you don't believe me go ahead and try us some time when we come to town. I am proud to say that we enjoy hurting anyone that wants to try us. We've beaten up plenty of fans, promoters and so called reporters in our young lives and I'm sure we will again.
JS: You currently work for some of the biggest wrestling promotions in the South like Full Impact Pro and World 1 South both of which you hold the tag team titles for. You also have made trips up North to Ring of Honor and CHIKARA. What would you like to say to wrestling promoters that are reading this and might be considering booking you for future shows.
SD: Like you just said we have worked for some of the biggest promotions in the country and I think we have proven ourselves as the most dominant tag team in the South. To add to FIP and World 1 South we also are the longest running SCW Florida Tag Team Champions ever as we held those titles for 17 months and we are also the current champions of the Caribbean Islands. I think it is obvious that we are damn good at what we do and we will bring a level of excitement to your promotion that only The Heartbreak Express can provide!.
PD: Not to dispute anything you have said Superstar but I think you are being way to modest! We're not just good at what we do..we are the BEST at what we do so any promoters that are reading this if you want the best then you have come to the right place as we won't just be the life of the party, we'll be THE party.
SD: That's right Fabulous One when The Heartbreak Express comes to town two things are bound to happen.
#1. The SRO signs will be hanging in the lobby as there wont be an empty seat in the house.
#2. Divorce rates are gonna go through the roof as the ladies of your area see the first real men the have ever laid their eyes on and they'll never settle for their "average" men again!
